We have a new LUG website. The old website used WordPress and it served us well for a number of years, but it had limitations, so it was time for something new. The new website has been built using the CodeIgniter PHP framework, which should prove to be a more flexible system.
Primarily, the new website has been designed to focus on and promote the dates of our LUG meetings. With this in mind, the homepage now features a calendar which highlights when the next meeting is, and links to a meeting info page, which details the location and time of the meeting.
The meeting info pages also provide details of new Linux releases (powered by DistroWatch) since the previous meeting, and links to Linux related news stories (powered by LXer). These are provided with the intention that they might provide some interesting talking points at the meeting.
Other new features on the site include:
- Scheduled posts to the mailing list, announcing meeting dates.
- Scheduled daily tweets/posts to Twitter and Facebook with countdowns to meeting dates.
- Updated FAQs page.
- New Mailing List page, detailing how to join and use the mailing list.
- New IRC page, this is a work in progress, but will aim to show new users how to connect to the LUG's IRC channel.
More work and improvements will be added to the website, but hopefully it will provide a good platform for the LUG into the future.
If you are interested in contributing to the website, you can find its Git repository here. If you have any comments or suggestions for improving the new website, you can get in touch via the contact page, the mailing list, or twitter. All feedback welcome.
